TESTOSTERONE REPLACEMENT THERAPY FOR MEN COMMERCIALS ON EVENING NEWS SHOWS.........we both heard it again last evening:
“Low T” commercials have disclaimers at the end that taking these pharmaceuticals can cause prostate cancer. Hypogonadism, Male Medication | Drugs.com There is a little “video” that scrolls down listing all the things to watch out for..... What if a single unsuspecting woman dated a guy who was on this drug???? Not to mention other pharmaceuticals.........that make everything seem great........ However, at the end admit that some might have “suicidal tendencies” when taking the drug.** **Last night on CBS evening news there was a segment on the increase of suicide in our country...... We both looked at each other and knew what we hear every evening in the commercials on the same show....... Many of the drugs advertised........sounding so hunky dory.......have disclaimers that they might cause “suicidal tendencies” or “cancer”..... ”May cause lymphoma, lung cancer, etc., etc., etc.” Now “prostate cancer” by taking the male hormone replacement drug....... There was a surge in female cancers after taking the birth control pills and HRT (female hormone replacement drugs)........so many women went off of them. There was a surge in upper thigh bone breaks and jaw disintegration after taking the bone building drugs such as Boniva and others...... Those drugs were initially for people with bone cancer .... The literature and research is out there.........the books on BIG PHARMA have been published for years............ They are out to “market” and “sell” and “make a profit”............ Originally miracle drugs like penicillian were life savers.........now there is a pill for everything.......and not always good for you. A few years back, our pet peeve was the obviously senior citizen women depicted with long stringy ,down to their shoulders, grey/silver hair skipping along with their golf clubs. I forget what drug they were supposedly taking..............it’s an insult to our intelligence...........not to mention the elderly gent on his “scooter” with his helmet on....... (the kind of one leg scooter that our grandson might have used when he was about 8 years old or younger)... They made it seem as though if you took their drugs, you would regain your youthful vigor.........that’s if you didn’t have a side effect of some worse terminal disease....... I just read a book “Syndrome X” on my Kindle..........and that author divulged quite a bit on the side effects of commonly prescribed pharmaceuticals...........plus how many doctors are trained in medical school in such a way as to prescribe these drugs....... Any alternative practitioners out there? Or those who agree that the Big Pharma ads have become totally "nuts" if one truly listens to them??? |

if one really listens to them why would they ask for that med in the first place.
We were a much better society when drugs were what the doctor knew about and prescribed instead of what the patients ask for today. We are a very over medicated country brain washed by television, magazine, newspaper and all other media. We are very naieve, gullible or just plain dumb. btk |

You got it. That's exactly what we say. Is anyone else really listening? We kid each other that the t.v. commercials of our youth with the Marlboro Man, the "soaps", etc. the Rheingold Girl Contest (beer) and probably there were whiskey commericals too..........weren't any worse than all these BIG PHARMA commercials of today.......... CDC Grand Rounds: Prescription Drug Overdoses — a U.S. Epidemic Prescription Drug overdoses is becoming epidemic. Although everyone knows that chronic pain can be challenging, we also all know folks who were prescribed years of oxycodone, etc. Whether for back pain, knee pain, whatever pain.........it can become addictive. An acquaintenance’s husband had to go into a drug rehab program for being given oxycodone at our hospital for his osteomylitis.....severe back pain resulting. This was a prescription written out by his doctor. The patient was a state trooper. It became one vicious cycle and constant hospitilizations due to infections like M.E.R.S.A. We know others who were prescribed it over and over again for occupational back pain, osteo arthritis knee pain, sciatica, etc. and became hooked. |

YUP, hate all those big pharma commercials - To be fair, I basically hate commercials, unless they are funny or have great music. I really resent putting food commercials that poke at our desires to eat when we shouldn't, and those big media commercials that are like brainwashing - yes, we want BIGGER and MORE - makes me hit PAUSE or MUTE! What I would like to see is less money being spent on advertising (political too) and more on product and society improvements. Just think of how much THAT would be!

Just had a conversation yesterday with a neighbour about how people are handing over their lives to people in "authority" who they think have more understanding about their bodies than they do. It is your life and your body and the information is all available. Take some active charge of your life as you have to live the consequences of choices you make. No one forces you to do or take anything. It is all in your hands (except of course in an acute emergency) and it behooves all of us to check out all the choices we make daily. It is your choice in the food you choose, the stores and restaurants etc. you support, the lifestyle choices you make, the people you hang out with, the movies and tv you watch........the list is endless. If we keep blindly supporting choices that are governed by the profits of the companies, we allow ourselves to be easily led down a path of their choosing.
It seems that more people are waking up, but we as a people have to get out of our "victim" stance and become part of the "take action" group in order to get change to happen. It has been said that if you keep doing what you've always done, you'll continue to get what you've always gotten. Change only happens at a different level of consciousness so that is why it is so important to keep getting more info. That's the only way I know of to raise consciousness. And I know that "driving your own bus" isn't always "easy", but it can be as exciting as you want to make it. And at least the consequences are of your own making which is very empowering and satisfying. Getting off my soapbox now. LW888

Just wondering if others are "hearing" the same things we are hearing. I know you are a deep thinker and independently "thoughtful" at that.... More power to you. Just my opinion but the big pharmaceutical companies are obviously out to make a profit.........have excellent marketing strategy and also a long line of people who want a quick fix without doing any "personal work".... Thanks for sharing your valuable opinion...........always interesting to read. |

The Boob Tube has been the nanny for many people who now look to IT as the source of medical wisdom. And IT cannot exist without the advertising dollars it gets from the "big pharma" advertisers. |

My doctor gets a little miffed (understandably) if I mention a drug being advertised on TV. And I happen to know that the pharmas send pretty girls around to promote their drugs to doctors. It's a dirty business.

That was also part of our conversation. In fact we were commenting on how few movies in TV were violence free. Quartet was the best movie I've seen all year and we used to be able to go to a different movie each week here a few trips ago. Now they are either vacuous or violent. Seems the actors of our generation are dying off and generally the younger ones haven't been making movies of substance. I don't quite know how entertainment translates into violence and horror. How does one get any "feel good" from them? JMHO.

look at today's video games - no 'feel good' there - they are modeled after frightening current events; and they can be turned into a movie or adapted from same in what seems to be a heartbeat!

Moderation is the key.
Let's not throw the baby out with the bath water. I don't have the time or the interest to get a medical degree so I will put my trust in the (traditional) medical community. I don't take any wild stuff, just the stuff that keeps most of us perking along as we age. I am NOT into alternative medicine. Traditional medicine has done well by all of us in our family. Very well, and I trust them, at least those back in Cincinnati that did some mighty fancy stuff to save the lives of people I love very much. I agree that pharmaceutical companies are making WAY too much money and I am also annoyed by their advertising...but they are still developing drugs that will save our lives. And it is not cheap to do all of that research. Just how and when and what do we do to keep them reasonable? Big Pharma has it's merits.....and it's faults. Just like big government.

"It is not surprising that from conception to market most compounds face an uphill battle to become an approved drug. For approximately every 5,000 to 10,000 compounds that enter preclinical testing, only one is approved for marketing. A 1993 report by the Congressional Office of Technology Assessment estimated the cost of developing a new drug to be $359 million. Newer figures place the cost at more than $500 million....." gracie - your post reminds me of the old dupont slogan - 'better living through chemistry' - used in television advertising years ago!
