I worked for one of the largest roofing manufacturers in the world and sold roofing shingles back in the 80's. That seal stripe does not have to be removed. The fact that you see the stripe is due to a faulty installation of the shingle. The roofer used an air nail gun to apply but did not place the nail in the correct position on the shingle. He either placed the nail inside the seal stripe or did not hold the nail gun in a position to allow the crown of the nail to be flat therefore not allowing the shingle course above to seal. I lost about 30 shingles off my home in North Labelle. The same situation occurred. I called the insurance company yesterday but plan to contact the warrantee dept in the AM. Yesterday I drove all over the neighborhood and only one other home had the same situation with shingles blown off. This is definitely a faulty installation of the shingle. I can assure you beyond any doubt. We should not have lost shingles if they were applied correctly.

This may help explain . I had a expert look at my roof after a hail loss. I lived in MN . To my surprise the siding was damaged by hail but not the roof. However the expert told me the shingles were defective. The only contact I had was with the builder ho referred me to a phone number in Pa (Certainteed)

I argued with them by phone and mail for 2 years, until they finally showed up at my home looked at only the garage portion of the house.

The representative said nothing wrong with my roof. I told him the expert I hired stop counting bad shingles after 300. I explained the roof was warranted for 30 years. He said shingles only last for 15 years and their stats showed that people move about every 7 years. I told him a judge would be interested in hearing that. I also learned that they lied to me by telling me they did not have representation in MN. In fact that had a mfg plant 8 miles from my house.

I sued them pro se. They called complaining that they did not want to send an attorney to defend this case. they offered to repair my roof. i refused told them their shingles were junk and they finally relented and settle. I also learned they had been in a class action suit over these exact shingles and it was the reason after two yeas they sent a rep to my home.

In short don't let the shingle mfg jerk you around

They were on all the shingles of the roofs that were damaged. My question: do shingles have this thin layer of plastic on when, applied to the roof? Thanks for any information. Also, recommendation for a roofer? We are 6-7 homes in a circle that need their houses done! Glad we are all safe!
Sorry to hear about your problem. I would start with home warranty, and at the same time let the shingle manufacturer know what is going on, as a backup. If the problem is widespread they may want to send out a representative. If there was improper installation, the rep will be able to determine that. Things will get sorted out, one way or another.

In response to my previous message, I went back and reread the OP, and then realized I misunderstood, the post after mine was very clear on the plastic strip. However, the few times I installed shingles (back up north), I never recalled seeing this strip, but this may be specific to a manufacturer. In any case, after reading all of the replies, it may have been defective installation of the shingles. I live in Pinellas, and I have specifically looked at several of the houses in the vicinity of ours, and have not seen any damage to the roof or shingles. The winds were so strong during IRMA that I would not be surprised if there were highly localized areas of higher speed winds that caused the damage mentioned above.

We have lost shingles. How do you know they are warranted for 110 miles an hour? Our home is 5 years old. We are calling warranty dept and can't get thru.

People that don't know what they are talking about..... might want to stay quiet.
Agree go online and look it up. Or take the shingle and lay them like they would be on your roof and see how the plastic lines up with the shingle underneath it.

I think about 8 or 9 homes have roof damage of the 26 but none as extensive as ours.
Looked at the shingles very closely this morning. The " glue " strips adhered to nothing with the occasional short shingle were the glue activated. Just shiny plastic unchanged from the day installed and the nailing is sporadic often times through the " glue " strips. Looks like very shoddy work or a crappy product. Maybe both. Does anyone think differently ?

Could there have been a small twister (tornado) in the storm in your area? Any other damage?

My husband was a contractor before he retired. He says the shingles are always the weakest part of the house. They are never glued down. He maintains that the use of nail guns is a big part of the problem and any roof he ever did he hand nailed but the code does not require this.

We also have shingle damage in Hillsborough; same reason.

There IS a fault in the shingles. Several homes in Hillsborough have been re-roofed because of it.

You can begin your claim on-line instead of frustrating phone calls.

We know there's a warranty because the info came in a packet at the time we closed. It is from the roofing MFG.

They could have been low quality. There are certainly different grades. Are they broken or just pulled loose?

It's in the literature you received when you purchased your home or google it Certainteed Landmark Series.

This is quite frustrating.

My home is 2.5 years old. The shingles are the original 30 year Certainteed Landmark shingles.

They are laying in a stack at the base of my lamppost.

We have a pointy, pointy roof and I was worried the roof would blow off but it didn't. I was worried the windows would blow out but they didn't. I was worried someone would die here in The Villages, but they didn't. I like to recall what Governor Scott said over and over and over. Homes and structures can be repaired but you and your family are irreplaceable. We didn't lose a single shingle. I am willing to bet that it may likely be a high wind mini happening in your neighborhood. I am grateful you can be here posting and trying to find an answer to this problem.
