Default Roofing Scams

I don't understand all this talk about roofing scams. I had my roofing replaced but only after the insurance company's own inspector look at the roof and then gave his OK. The installer said he could not start the replacement until he got a written approval from the insurance company to do so. Are the insurance company's inspectors in on the scams?

"Big difference , they will out last you. One and done." Metal

Metal here too. Sold on a 50 year roof. Only 20 years old now. Ins agent "replace it, save $500" or we raise you $1000

A $1000. bribe buys a lot. I got a couple of estimates on my roof—12,400 to 15,600. Told the roofing company I’ll pay $8500. They said no way. Told them I’d bring my roofer from Atlanta where I used roofers in my business and that I’d get it done for $6500 which included travel and disposal as well as the permit being pulled. Twenty minutes later I got a call saying they would do it for the $8500 as long as I paid for any extras such as new plywood. That ended up being $500. There is soooo much profit in roofing. Of course the worker comp insurance for roofing is high, but they still made a profit at 9k on a 1527 sf house. If you do not ask, you will not receive.

Our insurance hasn't gone up more than $20-$30 a year over the last 5 years since we moved in. It's about $850 now inc sink hole coverage. Roof is just about 9 years old IIRC. it was replaced a few years before we moved in under mfg's warranty as was a large part of this area. It's a 2/2 Colony. Next renewal is in July. This has me nervous now. It's Travelers insurance.

well, if we are ALL going to pay for it, then maybe we should ALL get new roofs, if we are ALL going to pay for it anyway?
do I really have to chip in some more money for insurance, for the guy next doors new roof?

Default Villages roofs unfortunately have to be replaced

The issue isn’t just that roofs are aged and brittle. The issue revolves around the fact that FL insuring companies (carriers) aren’t renewing policies (unless roof replaced of course) based on so many folks putting in claims 2018-2021.

Some of those claims were legitimate, but many of the field adjusters who approved them should not necessarily have done so. There were also some roofing companies sending inexperienced kids into TV to sell roofs to everyone without trying providing a proper inspection as a contractor.

We have never done that in TV’s and have always provided top service to all. Honest inspections and service.

Is there a Florida State license required to be a roof inspector? There should be a way to put these con people out of business or in jail if they are repeatedly condemning structurally sound roofs.

“One hundred men will test today”….. but only 3 out 100 roofer’s/inspectors/ adjuster’s are honest IMO of course.

We were informed by an agent of The Villages Insurance that the high premium increase we encountered is due to the roofing scams along with the many land disasters on the west coast. Insurance companies operate out of a pool of funds and claims from mudslide, fire, wind, and earthquake damage affect the entire industry and the cost of policies.

Following/researching this whole roof scam, has made me wonder if a buyer purchasing a used home will pay a higher premium if the previous owners used their insurance to replace the roof, or will a different insurer just consider a new roof is there - and take that into account (a lower premium)? Has anyone went through this yet?

If you list a home for sale, the very first thing the Realtor asks is if you have a new roof, who did it and when. I do know this for a fact.
