Gracie it's not the carrying of guns that gets me riled up but the high and mighty attitudes of some people spouting off and chastising others for doing something totally legal. There are things I don't approve of people doing but I don't criticize them or preach to them about it.

I've had guns since I was 8 years old. My family lived in the country and hunting and the such was part of everyone's life. I used to shoot rats at the landfill on Sunday afternoons. Farmers used to encourage us to help them get rid of woodchucks so that their livestock wouldn't get injured by stepping in the holes in the ground. I still have two 12 gauge pump shotguns in my home in The Villages. I'm not really sure why. Xavier

Quote:
With a lot of what's been happening around here these days, I can't blame anyone for wanting to carry a gun. Someone said, that this is a retirement community so there is never a need for us to defend ourselves. I believe that quite the opposite is true. Retirement communities are perfect targets for criminals. Most of us are no longer capable of defending ourselves in a physical confrontation. I believe that we live in one of the safest areas of the country, but that doesn't mean that things don't happen. We have had several people from my neck of the woods arrested in recent months and after seeing there criminal record, I am appalled to know that these people live in my neighborhood. I have actually had contact with some of them and Jenny had an incident with one. They are frightening people. We may have a very low crime rate, but there is still crime and like I said, it only takes one time.

Guns on Campus’ Laws for Public Colleges and Universities
A Guide for Students and Parents The overwhelming majority of the 4,400 colleges and universities in the United States prohibit the carrying of firearms on their campuses. These gun-free policies have helped to make our post-secondary education institutions some of the safest places in the country. For example, a 2001 U.S. Department of Education study found that the overall homicide rate at post-secondary education institutions was 0.07 per 100,000 students in 1999.1 By comparison, the criminal homicide rate in the United States as a whole was 5.7 per 100,000 persons overall in 1999, and 14.1 per 100,000 for persons ages 17 to 29. A Department of Justice study found that 93% of violent crimes that victimize college students occur off campus.2 Despite the success of these gun-free policies, an increasingly extreme pro-gun movement in the USA is promoting legislation and litigation to force colleges and universities to allow concealed guns on campus. As a result, schools in Arkansas, Colorado, Idaho, Kansas, Mississippi, Oregon, Utah and Wisconsin have now been forced in different ways to allow the carrying of firearms on their premises (i.e. campus grounds, classrooms, dormitories, or parking lots). from Colleges and Universities where concealed guns are permitted The Villages remind me of a campus. My kids have graduated but if they didn't I would want them on a gun free campus. It's safer. Why wouldn't I want the same thing for myself here? |

Has it been reported who actually was charged and with what?

Published reports say that the shooter was arrested after law enforcement found him in Lake County. The reports I read did not state what he was charged with or when and where he will report to face those charges.

So the reason the there are less violent crimes on campus is no guns, no other reason, nothing else, really? So the conclusion is lack of guns is the cause of the reduced violent crime, really??? |

In Wisconsin as of August 21, 2013, no private or public universities, colleges, or community colleges permit weapons inside of buildings. No private universities permit weapons on campus grounds. |

As for the former police, etc living here.....I would guess that very, very few of them carry a weapon because they know it is not needed here. Unfortunately, the folks that carry seem to have a "need" to tell people that they are. NOBODY needs to know if one is carrying a gun. Only hot shots feel the need to tell others. |
