Default Describe the New Retiree of 2030-2040

What do you think retirement for the Gen X'ers (the current 30 somethings) will be like in the year 2030 - or the Gen Y'ers (the current teens and twenty's) in the years 2040-50?

I recently speculated that if you see those 60 year olds (especially the "Y's") on the golf course they would have baggy shorts riding down 6 inches below their navel (a la urban rappers) and you'd have to look the other way when the bend down to pick up the ball. Then I was corrected and told they probably wouldn't have enough money to retire.

What do you envision will define future waves of retirees?

I picture a lot of the those retirees living in Panama or Mexico, I hear it's much cheaper. And by then the Mexican medical system may surpass the US medical sytem at the rate it is going. I know, I sound like a jilted American, I feel like one after this financial fiasco.

You really don't have any good thoughts about people younger than you? Do you actually know enough of them to make these kind of statements?

There are some of us that truly are not as described above....and will be retiring here in TV's and will live right next to you....or down the street...

There are many Xer's as you call us that do not qualify as an urban rapper....or even Y's that don't qualify....that is a very small percentage.

I think perhaps you should take time to get to know some people that are in this age group....see that we are not so bad...

Please do not put us all in to one category. It is hurtful and unnecessary.

Yes, I do.

There are exceptions to everything. Logically exceptions do not make the rule. So it is possible we are both correct.

As my middle school band director used to say when he was chewing out three quarters of the band members for acting excessively juvenile: "If the shoe fits, wear it." The fact that there were exceptions to the juvenile behavior did not mean it did not exist and need to be addressed. I will defend the appropriateness of noting demographic and social patterns and trends, commenting on them, and when appropriate, acting on them.

I provided the outrageous example as a conversation starter for this thread. Obviously I expect a wide range of opinions - like retiring in Central America.

But as long as you mention it, I am far from the only person who believes the prevailing attitude of many X'ers and most Y's is that life is owed to them on a platter and that they are above a level of work below the executive level. Ask a number of Human Resource managers. They will confirm that the age 20 to 30 job applicant demands much more and quicker upward mobility than their predecessors - perks without having earned them. This attitude is very likely a significant reason why so many younger people support Obama. He is promising the silver platter without having to pay for it. One doesn't have to have an intimate relationship with 1000s of that age group to read and understand social trends.

Not only will I have enough money to retire on in the Villages-- but I'll be playing golf (panties not showing thank you), running marathons, and dancing my butt off each night in the squares. Happy Hour will be observed daily. So really, a lot like the retirees there now!

Signed,
A happy, secure, works her butt off, no silver platter Generation Xer.

Ok....well let me say that I completely disagree with you...while I know that television and new magazines do not always portray us in the best light...here is a list of my family alone....ages 22-36....ONE family...8 children....that all have good careers, good families and good incomes...and ALL but one want to vote for Obama....pretty good odds in my opinion...

1...A Masters Degree/Physical Therapist for seniors and young children....a mother of 2....wife of a Colonel in the US Army who happens to be a Dr of Phsychiatry.....they are both 36!! hhhmmmmm.....

2. A Regional Sales Director for a national company helping Seniors and Veterans find housing and benefits that they so deserve....34 almost 35...

3. An officer of a major police department full time, father of one and part time Drug and Alcohol counselor...33

4. Marine Police in Iraq as we speak....on top of a college degree in business...and has provided financially for his daughter (thank god for my parents) while he is serving our country. 31

5. Director of Human Resources for a MAJOR hotel chain, with her Masters from Rochester Institute of Tech and working on her PhD....30....

6. Local Regional Manager for Lowe's hardware.....28...with a degree....but prefers not to work as an executive!

7. US Marines 25...enough said....

8. In Theology school to become a Catholic Priest....voting for Obama....not typically a democrat....22....

There you go Mucci! 8 educated, well rounded Y's and Xer's.....

Give me a break....it can't be that just this family are the only ones that are
in the minority....I know different....

Perhaps the few people in our age group that you know are not the most desirable....the most educated...the most driven....but as for me and my family and friends....we are the ones raising the children that ARE YOUR FUTURE....don't you wish you more like us?? Or perhaps maybe you want to have more time getting to know some of us...some of us have good learnin' ya know....

OH WAIT a minute...isn't PALIN just short of being an X'er?? And Obama for that matter? Just shy of being Xer's.....perhaps that is what you are afraid of....

SCARY huh??

The way things currently look, the word 'retiree" will be dropped from the lexicon by then.

Obviously, you are among those from a family of responsible, driven, successful, and fortunate folks. And apparantly you hang out with similar type people.

I make it a point to do the same. But I am also aware of what is outside of my circle. I am not that ego-centric to believe everyone is like I am, socially, economically, or behaviorally. It's a big world out there. Read about it.

You are obviously having trouble distinguishing exceptions from trends. The world is larger than your circle. Please note that being aware of the outside world is not the same as fearing it.

You are notably quite sensitive to any inference, light-hearted or not, that 20 to 30 year olds are anything but like you and your family. Well, I don't even know you, so there is no way I could have been referring to you. You and your family and all your friends don't make up the majority of the 20-to 30 year old universe. You can be proud and defensive with regard yourself, your family, and your circle of friends. I obviously lit a match under you when I provided a provocative lead-in to get some response to the question:

"What will the new retiree of 2030-2040 be like?" I'm sorry you took offense.

I understand where you are coming from...atleast I hear what you are saying...however...I do not think that everything we see on television or read is a fair way to see what the norm is...

I do believe that I come from a responsible family and very fortunate. I also believe that there are MANY others out there just like us. I get offended when I hear people talk about my age group in a negative light. I think it is very sad that you and more than likely many others think of us this way.

There are many 20-30 somethings that are good people, have good jobs, are responsible and are raising good children....in this VERY scary world.

I know you don't know me....probably will some day...but I really felt the need to defend what you say. I can understand sarcasim...I can be VERY sarcastic in jest. I apologize for jumping on you as I did...I honestly thought you were being serious and needed to defend.

I know there are many irresponsible people of all ages...complacent and apathetic in their lives. I find this even sadder....

So perhaps you are right....too many younger people in my generation will not know what to do when the time comes to retire!

I should just be grateful and thankful everyday that even in my 30's I can live here....obviously I do not have too many friends my own age so that really should tell me something...

I really shouldn't get so defensive...I am just so darn dramatic!!

Regarding TV: You can say THAT again. Regarding books: You gotta know the author(s).

Every generation has its' turkeys. By the same token, many observers of society believe there is a magatrend toward feeling entitled to things and stature not earned. During the debates on the illegal alien issue last year, you heard the expression "they do the jobs American won't do." Yes, there have always been waves of immigrants to take on particular "nation-building" projects." But I don't recall in history whole lines of work that American's won't do, as if most of it is beneath us. This is what I mean.

Ahaaa!!! That's the point of this thread. And what many experts are saying...the face of retirement is likely to change in 20-30 years...becoming perpetual part time work after age 65, for example. Will there still be a place for places like The Villages that are located away from employment centers - with only $7 or $8 an hour jobs? Will telecommuting (internet, video-conferencing, etc.) mature to the point where being located next to employment centers to continue our careers in "semi"-retirement won't be necessary?

How did you manage THAT? You're making me feel like a baggy-pants sloth at age 62!!!

And like I never get wound up on this forum.

This TOTV is the BEST thing that has ever happened to me! I have met some of the greatest people....whether I agree with them on everything or not....

Mucci....I look forward to meeting you one of these days....in this wonderful place we live in....

Now that I have thought it over...I really don't want too many more 20-30 somethings living here....I personally like the attention....being the "baby" of the group.

I hope I am forgiven when I "act my age"...I try not to most of the time!
