After trying about ever brand names of Salsa I have found “Medium Herdez roasted salsa Roja” best taste for me. Hot but not too hot. Made in Orange California by Magamex Foods LLC. They make regular, roasted, and come in three levels of hotness. Walmart has it Publix don’t if interested. IMO Salsa kind like pizza acquired taste what individual likes?

It might help you to understand what salsa IS. The word "salsa" simply means "sauce." There are MANY types of salsa. The type I like best is pico de gallo. I make it myself, because I make it better than anyone else does.
There's also a habanero roja at the taqueria that's amazing, but only if you squeeze a thin line across your taco. Otherwise it's too hot. There are salsas verde - green sauce - made with tomatillos and green chili peppers. There are sweet salsas, raw salsas, cooked salsas, exotic "foodie" salsas. Pico de gallo is a raw salsa - aka salsa cruda, made with FRESH tomatoes, jarred or canned chili peppers, fresh cilantro, fresh onion, and lemon juice, all chopped up and served in a bowl. I use my food processor and pulse all the ingredients a few times to get the right consistency. I generally eat it with a spoon, or I dump it over my fake nachos (triscuits, refried beans, chopped black olives, sharp cheddar cheese. Nuke for 30 seconds to melt the cheese, then add sliced pickled jalapeno peppers, and a spoonful of pico over each triscuit.) If you want a somewhat tasty salsa that's also healthy and not overprocessed, you can find plastic containers of it in the refrigerated bin where they keep the hummus, near the deli counter. La Mexicana's not bad, and Publix has their own brand as well. |

(Try bit of minced garlic in the mix. Don't forget the shot of tequila ... for the chef, before he/she begins) 😉 |

I'm not a fan of super-spicy sauce. The roja they serve at the taqueria is hot enough, and I'm pretty sure it's no hotter than habanero, and probably more likely serrano. It's flavorful, and doesn't hurt my throat. I do have habanero sauce in the house, an in-law made it. Great stuff, I sometimes add a few drops to the meatloaf recipe.

I agree homemade is best .....but don't forget the cilantro and garlic and Red onions. Like you said.....roasting everything on a grill sends it over the top.....my neighbors never believe I made the salsa from scratch. Someone is going to hate on the blender but chopped vegetables as a Mexican garnish is Pico de Gallo and not salsa.....blended homemade salsa beats anything you can buy and it's simple to make

My preferred salsa is Mateo's from TV soon-to-be favorite merchant - COSTCO! In my area, they sell two kinds of salsa, some in the refrigerated area in square plastic jars, and Mateo's which is in glass and not refrigerated and thus, harder to find in the store. It has a better blend of spice, imo.

Cilantro tastes like soap to some people due to a genetic trait that affects their olfactory receptors, particularly the OR6A2 gene, which makes them sensitive to certain aldehyde chemicals found in cilantro. This genetic variation can lead to a perception of a soapy flavor instead of the herb's typical citrusy taste.

Chunky salsas are still salsas. Tobasco sauce is a salsa. If you can dip into it, scoop it, pour it, or spoon it, chances are it's a salsa. |
