Default What cha cookin'?

I have just put my version of U.S. Senate Bean Soup in my crock pot.

Usually I don't use the crock pot much but lately I have tried some old top of the stove cooking recipes in it and they have turned out better after low and slow heat all day.

I will serve it with corn bread and diced fresh onion and I need to see if one of the neighbor couples want to share. You can't make a little bit of soup.

What are you cooking at your house that is gonna taste good on a coolish evening in Florida?????

doesn't have a name. Cabbage and onion and apple and carrot simmered in butter, mixed with egg noodles, seasoned with caraway seed.

Watch it Gracie, some will that this as a political post. Bean soup is better the second day and even better the third if there is any left.

Some day I will try the bean soup that I posted some time last year. Sad to say the restaurant closed shortly after the recipe was posted in the local paper.

Here is the recipe

U. S. Senate Bean Soup Recipe - Food.com - 18732

However, here is my quickie version.

About two cups of ham. I had some leftover in the freezer.
Two cans northern beans not drained.
Two cans chicken broth
One large onion chopped
One clove garlic minced
Two potatoes peeled and chopped or put in processor
One stalk of celery, chopped or put in processor
Parsley flakes

Put all together on stove top or crock pot and cook low and slow until it smells..umm done.

Surprisingly easy and good.

Oh I serve with Jiffy corn bread from mix. I like the sweetness.

Yes, that original version with the ham bone (which we all had back in the day) is the one I would make.....after soaking the beans, etc.

Since I do have Progresso cannelini beans (white beans) in the pantry, I'm going to try your version this coming week.......it sounds great.
Thanks.

Gracie

Try this next time. If the pot is big enough add one or two ham hocks. Cooking time will be a longer but when the ham is tender remove to a plate and shred. Then add the ham back into the soup and serve.

OH Virtual. I forgot the Ham.

I put in cut up pieces of ham that I had frozen. Oh it wouldn't be good without the HAM....Sorry. I will change it above.

Thanks Virtual.

Mom used to make us bean soup with a twist on the bread part. She would take dough and roll it out very thin like pizza, then using a mason jar lid she would cut biskets out and fry them in bacon grease real slow until brown on both sides. Yum Yum

It sounds good! Thanks, Gracie! It also reminds me of a very popular and one of the most traditional Brazilian recipes that calls for black beans and pork parts. "Feijoada" or Brazilian Black Bean Stew… The complete "Feijoada" that goes with white rice, slices of orange, Yuca flour and a taste of "Caipirinha"… And proud to say, these are from the state where I was born.
Some variation are my children's favorite!

Gracie - I just ran to Publix and got the ingredients and it's in my crockpot now. I used a red potato so I didn't have to peel it and I used frozen chopped onions and peppers. Mostly followed your recipe with a few changes of my own to make it even easier. I also made a smaller amount since I am alone. Thanks - it looks good.
