It could be the reused water they use to water common areas.

Very likely what it is.......the reused water.

In our town, if there was a pervasive odor, we would call our Town Clerk or call someone in the Water Department......doesn't TV have a higher up that they can call???? Everyone up here knows who works in the Town Hall and in the Water Department. Obviously, we do not have underground lawn sprinklers.......but just saying.......if there was a smell and it was perceived to be the water.......then we'd call. Or else, call the appropriate town office.

Who do you folks call when there is a problem????? Just wondering.

A short time ago, we discovered that the Blue Rhino plant which exploded wasn't that far from The Villages. Maybe there is other industry around the perimeter????? What other factories might there be???? Maybe they are emitting this foul odor.

Like up here...........if someone ran over a skunk or a skunk passed through someone's back yard..........the stench would last and last and be very annoying..........so I can understand why people are asking questions about this sulphur odor. Is it coming from the water treatment plant itself???? Maybe they have a problem. It is a nauseating smell.....no one likes to smell sulphur in the air.

Good luck with clearing it up........or at least getting answers.

Anyone raised in a city can remember the chemical smells every now and then (when we were kids) but it's something you get used to.

However, a pervasive odor in the air doesn't bode well for someone in TV trying to sell their home right now.........most people like to breathe fresh clean air.

I just found this:

A sudden appearance of dead fish in a lake or pond causes considerable concern and alarm for most people. Our first reaction is to suspect poisoning of the waterbody. Most fishkills, however, result from natural events, although people can influence their frequency and severity.

Fish kills usually result from too little oxygen in the water.

South Florida receives between 150 and 200 fish kill reports each year.

While some result from spills or illegal discharges of toxic substances, most kills occur when OXYGEN dissolved in the water drops to levels insufficient for fish survival.

For a dissolved oxygen of DO-related fish kill to occur, a combination of environmental conditions transpire simultaneously.

WEATHER PATTERNS, water temperature, depth and quality, amount and type of plant growth, fish community structure, along with the presence of viruses and bacteria are all factors that are necessary to trigger a fish kill.

Lakes, ponds and canals located in RESIDENTIAL AREAS are particularly vulnerable to DO related fish kills. Developed areas create runoff that contain high amounts of nutrients from SEPTIC TANKS.

In addition, street and yard drainage that enters waterbodies can cause water quality problems...

High levels of nutrients from fertilizers applied to lawns, golf courses and farms cause aquatic plants to thrive......

Ponds with high nutrient levels produce dense growths of microscopic plants called ALGAE.

When sunlight is available, algae use nutrients and produces oxygen through the process of photosynthesis. Most oxygen available to fish comes from algae.

DURING NIGHT TIME and cloudy weather, low sunlight causes algae to switch from photosynthesis to respiration, consuming oxygen needed by fish. During severe events, fish can suffocate from low DO.

Most frequently, fish become stressed during a low DO period and become susceptible to viral or bacterial infections.

Most fish kills occur in the warmer months of May through September.
Usually after a period of RAINY or cloudy weather.

Application of pesticides to control lawn and crop insects can enter a pond during heavy rains and cause a fish kill.

FISH KILLS CAN ONLY BE PREVENTED BY MAINTAINING GOOD WATER QUALITY.

CLEAN UP OF FISH KILLS OCCURING IN PRIVATE RESIDENTIAL LAKES AND CANALS ARE GENERALLY THE RESPONSIBILITY OF THE PROPERTY OWNER OR HOMEOWNERS ASSOCIATION.

No picture? If you make them with turkey bacon and cranberries they smell (I am told) scrumptious.

Default Rumford

Ahhhh yes, I also know well the smell of Rumford, Maine. My sisters and I still use "Rumford" as an adjective when describing a particularly offensive odor! Please don't tell me that the odor has retired to The Villages, too!!!

Nope, what you and I remember was a wood pulp paper odor; actually it wasn't there every single time.....it depended on how the wind was blowing.

Some in TV have mentioned an odor of "sulphur".....which reminds me of the sulphur water they use on the east coast of Florida in the water sprinkler systems (underground sprinkler system) for residential homes.

p.s.
When we lived in Satellite Beach Florida in 1972, there always was a smell of sulphur when the underground sprinklers would go on.
It was the water. Horrible odor.

We did not notice anything like that at all in THE VILLAGES.
The home we rented for a month had the sprinklers and the water had no odor at all.

Site conditions or weather factors causing sewer gas or septic odors
I know there are no septic tanks in THE VILLAGES, but could it be coming from an adjacent town, carried by the wind??
Keep scrolling down on this link to read about "weather conditions"
The odor was so bad last week that while playing golf, I has to hold a towel over my face. The guys at the starter shack said the smell was from fertilizer. In a way I agree, but in my opinion the product being used was what we called sludge. Sludge is the solid wasts from the sewer treatment plants, it is spread onto a flat surface of land and allowed to dry. I recall people in out small Illinois town lining up with their pickup trucks for a load of the dried sludge which they would use as fertilizer.

Default Peee....U

We played Palmetto tonight and the first hole was the worst....it seemed that the water stunk. I needed a towel over my nose too. It is so gross. I sure wish things would dry out a bit. Some of the holes on the courses are so wet.

Frequently Asked Questions

I looked up "reclaimed water" and it says here that it has very little smell....just a slight chlorine smell.
