How do you know "they can see" you??? I just stated above how it takes a few seconds for vision to adjust to the darkness when coming in out of the bright, bright sunlight!!

AND, if you're near the entrance and just ahead of them when they enter on a cart, they have horsepower and they're going to step on the gas to get going again once they've slowed and made the turn. They could be upon you in a split second with the engine power carts have.

I have realized for a long time of people cutting the corners entering tunnels. I have slowed down my golf cart driving a bit and if people don't like it too bad. I haven't slowed it down to a snail, but just not pedal to the medal for ALL driving. I have warned my husband about it too. So when I approach an end to the tunnel, I stop even before the white line with the word stop and then inch out until I can see and then go. I just don't know WHAT OUR HURRY IS.

Has anyone seen a golf cart turn to a golf path in front of the brick road we are suppose to use? They turn in front of the bushes there so they go angling across instead of making a left turn. Dangerous because the driver at the gate can't see you at all. Just seems I see something new every day.

I also slow down passing pedestrians and bikes on the paths. Make sure they know I am there.

The speed bumps are worth thinking about. They would have to put them across both lanes approaching the tunnel from both SweetBay and Caroline and on the eastbound side in the tunnel as you exit. If they don't put one on both lanes, people will cut into the wrong lane to avoid them creating more danger. Just like they had to put rocks on the grass for the same reason at Bridgeport.

Hi mikeod: You are absolutely correct. Drivers will continue to cut into oncoming traffic at these tunnels because they are taking the turn too fast. So the obvious solution is to force them to slow down. I hate speed bumps but that appears to be the most likely solution. Certainly honking one's horn will only add more noise and more confusion.

After 7 years of living here I am no longer surprised by the unsafe antics of golf cart drivers. I suspect the culprit lies in that such drivers view a golf cart as some sort of toy when most of us are aware it can be a deadly instrument.

Agree, but the behavior is not limited to golf carts. I've seen automobile drivers, and even bicyclists, perform the same unsafe maneuvers.

Maybe having speed bumps on each end would help? Also, removing the cement curbing on the gate side of tunnel when turning right might help too!! I'm sure someone will work it out for the good of all

It seems logical to give a quick toot on the horn when coming put of a tunnel. It doesn't mean you have to lay on the horn and scare people, but a toot would make people aware there is someone there.

If I'm heading into a tunnel and they are behind me they can see me in the daylight as we both head into the tunnel. If I'm already in the tunnel they have to be far enough back for it not to be a problem and I'm out before they get thru it. The tunnels are not that long. It takes me probably 5-10 seconds from one end to another.

And...if I'm at the entrance just ahead of them as we both go in, I hug the right and they go past me slowly. Never been a problem. But now...if I was running AGAINST the traffic, I can foresee a head on collision as I exit and a cart enters or vise versa.

There are NO requirements for someone to drive a cart. SO...those with lousy eyesight, hearing, reflexes, concentration, attitude, etc. are out there driving carts.
Kinda like demolition derby and we're all in it!

Survival might be for those who slow down and avoid those who THINK they are in this derby!

I'm with you on not blowing your horn in the tunnels. Where I come from, a blowing horn is relatively rare and is usually used to get someone's immediate attention because the other person has a problem. I use to live in Caroline and went through that tunnel many times and never had a problem. Although I don't care much for speed bumps, I would prefer speed bumps over blowing your horn---which as Bonny correctly pointed out would probably cause more problems than it would solve.

A lot of homes are situated by tunnels. I'm sure those people would get awfully tired of hearing horns all day (and night). The tunnel by Liberty Park comes to mind.
