No lap swimmers in neighborhood pools !! Go to the sports pools. There’s a lady at shady Brook pool that regularly does 100 laps. Not fair for everyone else trying to relax and gotta stay outta her way and listen to the splashing for an hour …….

The rules from the Recreation Dept. were linked a few posts back; please point to the one that says no swimming in the neighborhood pools. The lady at Shady Brook needs to get along with the others in the pool as well. While it would be ignorant for those standing or walking to intentionally get in her way, it is just as ignorant for her to believe there is an invisible lane that others must stay out of. We should focus on enjoying ourselves rather than looking for ways to be offended by what others are doing in the corner of the pool they are using.

Show her the regs and politely let her know she is infringing on the rights of others trying to enjoy the pool.

I live in the South. There ARE days when all of the Sports pools nearby (Ezell, Everglades, Spanish Moss, Rohan) have water volleyball or other activity scheduled for most of the afternoon. When the pool finally opens for lap swimming at 3 or 4 or 5pm, the lanes fill up immediately and you have to wait even longer to get a lane. Why do the volleyballers get the prime time of the day, noon to 3pm? The schedulers should balance the schedule so there's always at least 1 nearby Sports pool open for lap swimming at any given time of the day, but that has not happened.

Well, except that neighborhood pools are NOT swimming pools, they are adult pools for socializing. However, most of the time in the morning or around supper time people go home the pool is empty, and if you want to swim, do aerobics, or float on anything but a noodle - people are not going to care.

A discussion on swimming from another thread but more appropriate for this one.
Quote:
If I just want to sit in a chair, read a book, and soak up some sun but not talk to anyone then I cannot do that at a neighborhood pool? What if I vary my swimming times, could that then be considered a non-organized activity and permitted in the neighborhood pool? What if no one will talk to me (it happens ![]() Or, maybe the neighborhood pools are for everyone over 30 and therefore cannot be "reserved" for group activities, either officially or unofficially. And yes, this absolutely means that lap swimming would be on a space-available basis and cannot preclude other activities in those pools.

The old guy is probably cognitively challenged because the pools are too shallow to jump in safely. But family pools are meant for splashing and family fun in general.

The tl;dr version of all of this:
Individual people are ALLOWED to swim laps in any pool they want, as long as they respect the space of people who are in the pool, but not swimming laps. Organized groups that swim laps are NOT allowed to schedule their pool time together at anything other than the sports pools for their events. Organized exercise groups are NOT allowed to schedule their pool time together at any other than the sports pools. But if a couple of neighbors want to go to the pool together and hang out at the shallow end, that is FINE. And the lady who lives near Legacy, but likes the Hilltop pool more, feels like going to the Hilltop pool to do her 100 laps, that is also FINE as long as she doesn't get in the way of people who are just hanging out to socialize. |

If it is appropriate to interpret the rule to say that swimming is not allowed because the pool is for socialization and swimming isn't socialization then how is it overly literal to interpret the rule to say that reading, sleeping, or standing alone are not allowed because the pools is for socialization those are not socialization? Or maybe we can read the second half of the sentence and let others enjoy the pool as they wish.

1. the activity of mixing socially with others. "socialization with students has helped her communication skills" 2. the process of learning to behave in a way that is acceptable to society. "preschool starts the process of socialization" It is not the activity of swimming specifically that is discouraged, it is how it is done. If one swims in a way that is socially acceptable to the others in the pool, ie no splashing on hair dos, no startling people talking, then it is acceptable. But I am wondering, aren’t we all adults? Why is this so hard to understand? |

We can and should share the adult pools. As a slow, older, lap swiimmer there are many times when a neighborhood pool is available and the sports pools are not available. I have had good experiences with people willing and happy to share. My swims are 20 minutes max. The folks who go to the pool just to stand around in the water would do their health a big favor by doing a little swimming or kicking. Swim lessons are available in TV through the Enrichment Academy. |
