With all of this talk re preserving "youthful appearance" re surgery and such, how many MEN out there truly want a trophy wife on their arm who looks (or is twenty years their junior) or who is simply happy with their older model wife who has been through the ups and downs of raising a family and everything else that comes with a long marriage.....including aging along with the husband, who no longer looks twenty either.
Unless this faction that is having all the facelifts, etc. are the under 55 crowd? I can honestly say that I do not know a single person in our town or other towns in our state that has had a facelift. We laugh at the movie stars who look petrified with the Botox injections. Are Floridians really that vain? Just asking. Not starting a war. Up here, NATURAL is in and always has been in............ |

First, let me say that my wife is as beautiful to me now as she was when we first met 42 years ago. She has not had any cosmetic surgery nor have I.
If she came to me and said she would like to have botox to get rid of some lines or cosmetic surgery to get rid of "turkey neck" (she does not have one!), I would be totally supportive. The only thing I would not agree to is the huge fat lips that some women get. I was watching Celebrity Apprentice last night and Lisa Something has the fattest, ugliest lips you can imagine. Joan Rivers was also on the show as an advisor and her facial plastic surgery is hideous. Cosmetic surgery to remove age lines, flappy arms, turkey neck and such things are not vanity. It is a personal choice. Be supportive of your mate. Do not degrade your wife by ever pointing out signs of aging on her. Mine is the best thing that ever happened to me and I am grateful to have her everyday. |

I personally know five plastic surgeons in Newport Beach, one in Albuquerque (known locally as fat sucking Frank because he is so good at liposuction) and another in Santa Fe, NM. Many of the women I know, both single and married, have had various procedures. Yesterday I was at the gym. Probably most of the women there, from their twenties into their seventies had had some work done on them. Some of the men I know have had a little work done, too, eye lifts, liposuction on their love handles, and rarely, a facelift. Although it might not be plastic surgery I know some women as well as men who have had hair replacement procedures. My feeling is if a person is truly unhappy with his or her appearance and has the money, why not get it done? It can positively change one's life.
I totally agree with buggyone about the lips and Botox can be and in my opinion is frequently overdone. I have seen the results and they ain't pretty. That is for sure. Must be a different world in Vermont!

What is there about hair on men, when changed in any manner draws negative attention to the man? In MY opinion, anyway.
On TV you can see when guys use a color, you can see it on girls too, but on guys it looks so artificial and to me, so unmanly. AND toups are SO obvious to me. I don't like 'em. I like the original condition of hair on men, a lot, or a little or none, clean and nice with a golf hat sitting on it. As a man ages, what is so appealing is his smile, the twinkle in his eyes, the wink that signals he approves of you. The smell of Dial soap and colgate, a clean golf shirt and khaki shorts and nice white footjoys. Yum-o. That is my sweetie. He doesn't have any scars behind his ears...or anywhere.. But he keeps on my good side, too. ![]()

It is a different world where people just age and get old , wrinkled and decrepid....but gracefully. We definitely have been here too long. Vermont Life Magazine Let the beautiful scenic photography unfold.........slowly.... When you look at a Vermont Life magazine or a Vermont Life calendar you realize it is a “Different World”.......... and that is why so many people moved up here when there were still “more cows than people”. They wanted a simple life in which to be creative....whether as a craftsman, an artist, a writer, etc........................ or just to raise their children in a safe environment..........as it is a rural state, but beloved by tourists from all over. |

Now Santa Fe calls itself the "City Different" and is also a retreat for people from urban life. It also has a few excellent plastic surgeons.

Are you sure you are not just saying that because of fear you might find a horse's head in your bed???
Truthfully, I agree......whether male or female. Kindness and inner peace radiate natural beauty......in all ages. Any luck in finding your new home in The Villages.......? So many choices...... I know you don't miss Connecticut, but up north here our trees finally have leaves opening up; our grass is emerald green and it's been 74 degrees. Our phlox are opening up.........and everything is beginning to bloom......so spring has sprung a bit earlier than usual.....maybe due to global warming. At least the snow is GONE. Good luck in finding a place to hang your hat..........and really, don't worry about the horse's head. It would be too messy....... |

Neither my wife nor I look our age. However, my wife once asked me if she should have some work done. My response to her was that it was her decision but if she decided to do so then my plea was that she not return home a stranger. My wife is a perpetual cheerleader always upbeat, always playful and so much more interesting than me.
The best response, in my view, for the issue of surgery came from Peggy Noonan who when asked about facelifts, etc stated "Beauty belongs to the young." Ever since i was a kid I just seen to graviate toward old folks. Found their stories to be fasinating, study the lines in their faces and hands and paid attention to how so many of them had reached that stage in their lives when the pretense could be dropped life appreciated so much more, etc. |

The oldest women whom I know have been when they had any extensive elective plastic surgery was around the age of 60, plus or minus a couple of years. Surgery becomes more dangerous as one ages. I have had both shoulders and one knee 'scoped. The first surgery was in my early sixties, the last when I was 70. At 70 I had to have a thorough pre-op exam, EKG and so on to clear me. If I recall correctly the testing was not as extensive in my sixties.
The skin loses elasticity with age which is another reason to forego unnecessary plastic surgery later on in life. The results may not be satisfactory. It is best to start young while the skin is still elastic. The surgeon will not need to be aggressive. If one waits too long, too much will have to be done and the results may not be optimal. One of my neighbors had his eyes done at the age of 79. His eyelids were drooping over his pupils and affecting his vision so it was covered by Medicare. The surgeon also cleared up the bags under his eyes while doing the "medical need" surgery. Within a few weeks I could not tell he had surgery and I can usually spot it if I look. In some cases, at least around here, I can even determine which local surgeon did the work on a woman. The best surgeries are the most unobvious ones, that is unless the patient is in a witness protection program.

We didn't expect them to be any different than their natural selves...... We enjoyed them "just the way they were". Sad that people cannot just age gracefully as they did in the past............ Yours were the words of wisdom. Your wife is lucky to have you, as you are to have her. |
