I heard on the news that he has snapped out of it. I can't help but wonder if this is one of those Kardashian things.

Looks like it's true:

Lamar Odom regains consciousness, family and friends say - Yahoo News

I hope he straightens his life out in the aftermath of this close call

Exactly. You can't get any closer to rock bottom than this!

I heard he woke up but is brain-damaged and still in serious condition.

My grandmother told me that some things are worse than death.

It's important to note that addiction is a disease, not simply a poor life choice. Many fall prey to this disease for a vast variety of reasons. Unfortunately, we shame the unknown, yet offer prayers and support for the well-known. They all deserve our prayers. Lamar Odom has the funds, the means, and the positive support, yet still fights a losing battle with it. How difficult it must be for so many others. I've seen it in many Soldiers, as well as others. Instead of damning them to hell, please offer prayers and/or encouragement that they may find a way to want to help themselves. Most humans don't want to be miserable or judged as worthless. Just my thoughts.

Another question however--
Is it clear he has a chronic addiction, or did he just go and party excessively and something got way out of hand?

This was the end result of a long time drug addiction that has ruined his life. Maybe if he survives, he will have the opportunity to turn it around.

There were pictures of him on TMZ and the camera was following him around at the pleasure ranch and if I know anything about humans he seem to enjoy the limelight.

He could have left. I think it is more than addiction or less than addiction. It turned me waaaaay off.

The media covers this s$it because it sells more media. They should be doing biographies on the Doctors without Borders that lost their lives. They are true heros. Most sports "hero's" are thugs and should be treated as such. People that follow the lives of Kardashians and worship thugs should not reproduce.

I understand his first words were "What a ride!"

Advertisers turn these ordinary people with special skills into heroes and role models just to sell shoes, clothes and cars and a lot of people buy into it. Next fans feel let down if they don't live up to expectations. I think it's a mistake to encourage children to look for role models they don't know personally. Pick out a relative or a neighbor and sing their praises. That's what we did.
In the good old days, reporters looked the other way if you were famous. Now everyone is a reporter and everyone has a camera.
