I have a sister-in-law who lives on a golf course in Spring Hill. she had a sink hole and it cost well over $200,000 to correct
Frankly I would rather face the risk of a sink hole than the risk of driving on Highway 19, since the chances of risk on the latter are substantial higher |

Hey! It's a bubble not a cave. We know. We know. We know.
When we bought our house, I had just one big fear. In fact, it was a great big white hot terror. Of getting bizarro neighbors. But it did not happen. Not at all. All of our neighbors are absolutely wonderful. Every one of them. So I'm good. ![]() |

They do show up in people's backyards on occasion, especially if you live at the edge of town......along with deer, moose, fox, & a variety of other critters.........our daughter lives on ten acres of forested land in northern Vermont; a bear ate their groundhog who had been killing their chickens. Yes, it happens. It's still not the same as the ground collapsing......not talking "pot holes" after the winter weather. Vermont is a beautiful, natural state........but, speaking of bears, our neighbor to the west, New York State.....often has bears up in trees in neighborhoods.........they are out there......all over the northeast. Even in NEW JERSEY. Our nephew sees them all the time in Bergen County...........part of life. Unless you are in Yosemite or out west somewhere, I doubt if the Vermont bears are attacking people. We have a big family of deer that cross through our back property all the time.......as this used to be apple orchards. It seems to be an inbred "memory" generation through generation........to return to where the apples were. They are beautiful to watch after a fresh snowfall. |

Everybody loves their home. Ohio was my home and now Florida is my home. It is just human nature to identify with where we live and feel protective of it.

I know. Our older tall trees were all taken down years ago , leaving only the ones at the far back of the property & the evergreens on the side property lines........they were beautiful, however, now we have no fears of trees falling.........also they keep our power lines well cleared of trees..........we, ourselves, are o.k. We are pretty safe where we are........having alternate sources of heat, etc, etc., etc.......usually, it's the people on the coast that lose their power for long periods of time. We have a CVPS fellow who lives in our neighborhood, so in the rare event of power lines down, he comes to the rescue........it's actually Green Mountain Power now. As far as leaving our pipes to freeze, we put on a gizmo onto the furnace which calls any one of our neighbors who come over to check it out..........also our plumber. We can also drain the water out........as far as food & water, we are as well prepared as any "prepper" out there.... |

Don't know about the VT bears but the NY bears do attack. The girl who did my hair actually chased one who stole her beer. I know people with scars from bears. They are a danger to pets. Perhaps the VT bears don't attack, maybe they got into a stash, who knows.

http://www.fws.gov/refuge/missisquoi/ This is one of the few places we have ever seen a mosquito in Vermont. Missiquoi Refuge. It's flat, wetlands.....close to Canada. Near Lake Champlain & the Champlain Islands. Northern Vermont actually had an encephalitis scare, just like Florida......last summer. I think they call it eee ?? E.E.E. Eastern Equine Encephalitis? Only where there is swampy water. Our only large body of water is to our Northwest.....Lake Champlain borders Vermont/New York State. Where we are , there are no mosquitos.......NONE. No spraying with poisonous chemicals, nada. However, up in the mountains there are black flies in springtime, which are most annoying. Where we are, we have plenty of BEES, HORNETS, WASPS. Always something, isn't there? Right now we are trying to capture a groundhog & skunk....in a have a heart trap. |

http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Vermont Above link leads to a humongous long long wiki article on Vermont (if you keep scrolling down). Huge volume of info. Fortunately, Vermont & our town in particular was the quintessential New England small town in which we chose to raise our family from 1970 until they flew the coop before 1990. Vermont retained its innocence & small town flavor; still does. Most people do not commute more than a few minutes to work. Less stress that way. Relaxed lifestyle. Neighbors who know entire generations upon generations of family. The "drug problem", which our drug task force seems to have under control, thanks to a young enthusiastic sheriff who wants his two little boys to grow up in the same safe atmosphere he grew up in............was a shocker to all of us. These drug dealers come up from THE BIG OUT OF STATE METRO CITIES......targeting the locals, get them HOOKED.....thus they then have to SELL in order to support their own habit.......which is very addictive. Cocaine & Heroin. THEY'VE ROUNDED THEM ALL UP IN BIG DRUG BUSTS........WEARING S.W.A.T. TEAM GEAR......SCARY TO SEE....WITH HELICOPTERS FLYING OVERHEAD........ Our Governor making the speech "spread the word" & it got national attention. They take pics of the culprits being handcuffed & taken to jail, booked the same day.... This is not something that is unique only to Vermont in the present climate of drugs in America......... HOWEVER, because Vermont is a small, low population state, known for it's bucolic serenity, beautiful natural scenery & excellent quality of life..........it got massive media attention...........but we are glad they rounded up the KING PINS, which I am not allowed to DESCRIBE HERE.........but they are NOT native VERMONTERS, believe me. They wear the gang colors of ex cons from big city prisons.........they saw Vermont as a soft target to peddle their goods........getting the 20 to 30 something aimless youth addicted. Believe me, when I say that Vermont has more health conscious youth than druggies. More upstanding WHOLESOME youth than the druggies. These "city guys" come up, find a gal pal.....move into her apartment......& peddle their stuff.....but our police are doing a great job of scaring them off........& arresting them. But, since you & many others seem to have bought into the drug problem issues of our state, the damage has surely been done as far as our pristine reputation of years gone by. We always felt safe, leaving our doors & cars unlocked........now we lock our doors...........but then, we are older & wiser.......knowing that anyone can drive up here to peddle their drugs..............another huge problem in all states is the abuse of pharmaceutical prescription drugs........ Not to be defensive, but truthfully, we are safer than most other states I can think of. This is why we have chosen to stay put. Addiction is a terrible thing.......I agree. Most kids raised in loving families will know NOT TO START taking drugs.........and to avoid bad companions. |

Why is there a drug task force in SWAT gear rounding up big dealers if there aren't any drugs? I'm NOT GETTING THIS.
Y'know, SC, it's obvious that you love your adopted home state so why even entertain the thought of leaving. It's equally obvious (to me anyway-LOL)that you don't like TV, not the place, not the people, not the lifestyle. SO, What gives? FYI-Not that it matters, but Spring Hill is a town, not a subdivision and the Equine Encephalitis outbreak in this area was brought in from out of state horses. The other outbreak I think was a result of a faulty "cocktail". Neither one had anything to do with Central Florida.
