Somewhere along the line, I know that I have posted how a thread like this one amuses me!

Many, many years ago (mid 1960s) I served on the board of the homeowners association on a private street in St. Louis, Missouri. At every annual business meeting just about the only subject matter was "The d*** dogs!"

Several years later (late 1990s) I again served on that same board. At every annual business meeting just about the only subject was "The d*** dogs!"

And, here I am in The Villages, where I read almost daily about "The d*** dogs!"

Seems to me that it's another of those perenniel problems [like the Mid-East] that will never be solved until all dog-owners pick up after their pooch!

Just reminiscing!

SWR

P.S.: In case you don't know, I am a Cat Person!

this subject is like the so many things in life....a very few, let's call them the minority, dog owners do not act responsibly.
Then there is another minority, the ones who actually see one of the irresponsible dog owners not doing the right thing.

The next thing that happens is the issue is presented as if there was a whole sale problem of nothing but irresponsible dog owners.

It is the typical minority reporting of the minorities while the majority get ignored.

Fact: most all dog owners do the right thing.

The usual making of a ham sandwich into a banquet routine!

One rule...is do not walk your poochie on the golf-course paths or on the golf courses whatsoever! Saw a woman late today doing just that on the Amelia golf-course. She looked pretty comfortable doing it so wonder where the Ambassdor was!?! Regardless of what some folks feel about this...it isn't the thing to do.

respect your opinions on many subjects. but to say as you said "Fact: most dog owners do the right thing." don't have any idea where or how you call that a "FACT" or what you could possibly based your statement on because there are a lot of villages and each one has a lot of neighborhoods... and from where I am sitting... most dog owners do NOT do the right thing.

Default My two cents

Although our dog does his business in the backyard of our courtyard villa, we do take him on frequent walks. When on a walk he is only allowed to walk on grass in "common areas" such as along outside walls of CYV's, along golf cart paths, and around mail box stations.
Although the mail station in our village is frequented by many dogs, I have not noted any problem with brown spots or yellow spots in the grass. Wonder why this is? Also, our dog is a neutered male, and no matter how many times he pees in our own yard, he always has some in reserve to sprinkle the occasional fire hydrant or bush. Errant pee episodes are not 100% preventable.
I always pick up any dog poop I see, but must admit it is far less of an annoyance to me than the provision of cigarette butts I see everywhere we walk. Smokers seem to toss them about with absolute abandon.

Default Unofficial poll from Mallory

Disclaimer. We own a dog, we have always owned dogs and they become part of our family.

Here is my unofficial poll for Thursday. I had some stuff to do on the computer this AM, here is what I observed out my front window:

In summary, I had no idea how much dog traffic was on my road. Found ONE instance of a handler that had control of his dogs.
  • 7:15 Two barking dogs barking in the yard of a villa directly behind our home. Let out with no supervision at 7:15 AM.
  • 7:26 Woman walking two dogs, one large, one small. Large dog is up in plantings of neighbor across street, marks bushes (15+ feet into property). I asked her very politely a few weeks ago to not do this in my yard. Since then she has used the home across the street.
  • 7:43 Man walking small dog. Dog using yards along the way, only in yards by a couple of feet.
  • 7:50 Woman walking little dog, peed in my yard, 2 feet onto grass.
  • 7:56 Man with one larger dog in my plant bed 15 feet from road sniffing…. no deposit, maybe next yard….
  • 8:03 Stop the presses. Man walks by with two dogs on leash and under control…
  • 8:03 Man coming other way with little dog at end of leash barking at two behaved dogs, this dog marking most yards…

I need to head out now. I suspect the dog owners that do the right thing will be by later

I too have been able to survey our front lawn this AM, however my list is much much shorter:
  • Woman walking two older mini Collies. Regular passerby who usually keeps dogs on the road. This morning one walks on grass and takes a dump near end of property. Owner picks up. Me smiles! End of story!
BTW, my disclaimer is that we haven't had a dog since 1999! It's kitty city today!

At last some factual data on the dog poop problem.

I love to read the posts on here from posters who I think always post fairly and with kindness. Swrinfla, Bogie Shooter, Barefoot, billethekid, skyguy, ajbrown, Notgolfer and many others ...all of them tell it how it is.

Just as Billethekid says, the problem comes from a minority of dog owners and I say they are the ones who probably didn't discipline their kids or didn't have any. We all love our own pets and children and think they are adorable and flawless...others haven't bonded with them. It is our job to take care of them in such a way as to not annoy other people.

We haven't enjoyed having a dog of our own for a long time and now love TWO kitties, Mikey, Harry and Hershey. But we love dogs. I sit on my front porch in the mornings and evenings and see my dog friends taking their owners out and about. Mozart sits in the back of the four seater as his mom or dad takes him out for a hamburger. Lucy walks slowly by and Prince trots with his French poodle cockiness. We see Gracie the ****zuh, and we know each other but she knows she is cuter, and we see a little iddy biddy dog who weighs less than five pounds and I forgot her name.(It isn't Bruiser..something like Amy or Taylor) We have a new Schnauzer whose owners just moved in,but we haven't been introduced yet and Gus who lives next door and is a thousand years old in dog years.. They all walk by with their owners and never stop to tinkle or poop in my yard. Their owners walk them in the street.

I love dogs. I love to see them and pet them and I am glad they are part of my experience in Lower Paradise.

Thank you Gracie for that last nice comment. I have been reading with interest the posts here as I am coming in May for a Lifestyle visit and have 2 small dogs. I guess I am one of the responsible owners, as I watch my dogs carefully even in my own fenced yard here in the Chicago suburbs. I was a bit surprised at the intolerance and bickering of some, but understand they work hard to keep their yards looking nice. I asked myself if I wanted to join a community like that, but realize there are many, many people all with differing opinions. Pets are a wonderful part of our families, and one has to be committed to taking care of them responsibly, seeing to their needs, and reaping all the rewards they have to offer. No matter what the species! Infringing on your neighbors is never a good thing, be it pets or children or even oneself!
So I will come to TV in May with no preconceived notions and decide if this is indeed as nice as I have heard it to be! I look forward to my visit and experiencing all your communities have to offer!

By the way, saw a woman in front of the Rialto Theater, the other day, with a black cat on a leash.

Please don't let this thread detour you from coming down to TV. We really are a dog friendly community. Most of the dog owners are responsible.

Most of our neighbors have dogs as do we, and I for one have never seen anyone not pick up after their dog or let their dog run the yards.

However, on the rare occasions that a dog does pee on someone's lawn... The whole yard turns brown and the plants shrivel up and die!

I'm so glad that you're coming for visit in May. I just had a PM from a poor lady that said she cancelled her Lifestyle Visit because of this thread. She said she wouldn't feel comfortable living in a community where there are so many residents who don't like dogs. She really got a wrong impression of the true situation. In my humble opinion, of course.

You will have a wonderful time. And I think you'll discover that 99% of Residents love dogs. And that 99% of pet owners act responsibly.
