Hi Martin5400! Welcome to the forum!
For me, the best exercise is done in the water. Serious exercise focusing on the core muscles (back and gut) has strengthened my body without doing damage. You may know that we have water classes here that are free to residents. The one I go to uses water dumb bells, noodles and exercise bands and is open to men and women. We attend three mornings a week, for 50 minute classes. Focusing on perfecting my form rather than counting repetitions has been the key for me, so no matter what type of exercise you are inclined to enjoy, I think that tip may serve you well. If I can only do 4 reps well, for me it is better than 8 sloppy ones to keep up with others.... I get more out of it and it's safer too. Good health to you! |

A very good, low impact exercise for overall health is walking. Walking is recommended by almost every health-oriented source in the world.
(It's fun, too!) |

Muscles.... If you ask any trainer they will tell you that you build muscles with weight and reps. The more reps the better then you move to more weight and more reps. Its weights every other day and cardio on the others.

Heaven knows I'm the last one who should be giving advise in this area, but I've always heard that resistance training is the best way to strengthen muscles. Thought you'd like to read the link I've provided to at least learn more about it!

For me right now at 57 : 1. Walking with my wife and our Shih-poo. I get a little more of a workout when the precious little one runs out of gas and I have to carry her like a football. < The Shih-poo, not the wife.> 2. Water Aerobics 3. Badminton 4. Tactfit bodyweight workout 5. Indoboard for balance and FUN |

Running? Not for me anymore. Don't like the pounding. Are you running on the hard streets? |

Yes, I much prefer running on hard streets. The grounds in parks or grassy areas are not consistent - a good way to twist an ankle. Barbells are better because you use can them for forward lunges and overhead presses - much better than dumbells. Different strokes ...... |

The two most basic strength building exercises of which I am aware are squats with a barbell on one's shoulders and bench presses, the former for the legs and the latter for for the upper body. If one wants to build muscle strength one needs to up the weights and reps over time.

If I had to pick one exercise for muscle development and strength it would be the Push Up.
